Connect your first router (the one that you want to use as the mainserver router) to the computer using an Ethernet cable. Set up the router in a proper manner using the right cables. Now you need to configure the router. To do so, open your internet browser and type ‘192.168.2.1’ (without quotes and as is) in the address bar. Hit the Enter button on the keyboard.
When the router’s login screen comes up, type the admin username and/or password and hit the Login or Submit button whatever you see there to proceed. In the router’s interface, highlight the Wireless tab and the click on the Basic Wireless Settings sub tab. Note down the Wireless Network Mode (mixed, g, or b whatever is there), Wireless Network Name (SSID), and other information on a piece of paper and keep it safe as it will be required in next steps.
Click on the Wireless Security sub tab and then select Security Mode viz. WEP, WPA or WPA2. Choose pre-shared passkey and type a password of your choice in the relevant filed. Note down all this information on a piece of paper and keep it aside for further use. Click on the Save Settings button and exit the router’s Setup interface.
Now connect the second router (the one that needs to be bridged with the server router) to the second PC using an Ethernet cable. Plug the power cable into the power outlet and boot the devices. When the devices have booted, login to the router’s interface in the same abovementioned fashion (check first and second steps for more information).
When logged into the Linksys Setup utility, highlight the Setup tab and then click on the Basic Setup sub tab. Under Network Setup next to Network Address Server Settings (DHCP), click to select the Disable button to turn off the DHCP feature in this router. Since the server (main) device will be using this feature, it is not required to have it enabled in the bridge device.
Highlight the Wireless tab and then hit the Basic Wireless Settings sub tab. Click on the dropdown menu next to Wireless Network Mode and select Client Bridge. Match the settings on this tab to the settings in the server router. Now click on the Wireless Security tab and ensure that all the setting match with those in the server device.
Highlight the Status tab and then select the Wireless (sub tab). Hit the Site survey button to bring up the Site Survey dialog box. It will display the list of all the wireless networks it could find in the area. Locate your network and then click on the Join button. Now open your web browser and check whether you can connect to the internet or not. If you cannot, then review and match your settings exactly to those mentioned in this article.
